9:00 am BDS Monitor Live on Tue May 13th, with Alex Joffee

The first academic semester of the Trump Administration has brought momentous changes to American higher education. New Federal regulations regarding DEI and antisemitism, and calls for curriculum reform, have been backed by funding cuts. The higher education industry and its supporters have united in opposition to the demanded changes, setting up confrontations in courts and in public opinion. Equally loud defenses of foreign students targeted for visa revocation on the basis of criminal behavior and support for Hamas are also being heard. Jews on campus and across the US are caught in a crossfire over the future of universities and the question of academia's role in setting the American agenda.

9:00 am What are the moral, humanitarian and legal obligations of an attacked people to provide humanitarian aid and support to their enemies? with Moshe Jaffee,

As we all know, on October 7, 2023, the Jewish people and the state of Israel endured the most difficult day of its existence since the Holocaust. We are all haunted to this day by the searing images of Jewish children being burned in ovens in front of their parents; of parents tied to chairs and slaughtered in front of their children; of women and mean being murdered or physically raped and tortured and paraded in front of cheering crowds in Gaza. Meanwhile, 51 hostages remain in captivity in Gaza. No one knows exactly who is alive and what sort of hell-like conditions they have had to endure. On Monday, May 5th, Israels Cabinet approved a new plan for the distribution of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza. We have seen, over the last 19 months, how Hamas has commandeered and looted the food aid delivery and how the United Nations and the International Red Cross has not visited our hostages, even once. What are the moral and legal obligations of an attacked people towards their attackers? What does International Law say is advisable in such a situation? What are the moral, the legal and in the humanitarian obligations of the Jewish nation toward their enemies?About our Speaker: Here to discuss this is Moshe Jaffee. Moshe received his LLM from Columbia University Law School, and is working on his doctorate at the University of Michigan Law School. He teaches a class on Constitutional and International Law at Cardoza University School of Law, and at The Academic Center for Law and Science in Israel and has lectured at Harvard University Law School and at West Point. Moshe is a member of the IDFs Advocate General Corps.

10:00 am Israel and the Woke Right with Karys Rhea

The Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023 and the subsequent war in Gaza have exposed a fissure within the America First or MAGA movement. A new cadre of anti-Zionist voices, led by figures like Tucker Carlson and amplified on X and TikTok, has emerged, wielding leftist-style tacticsidentity politics, cancel culture, conspiratorial antisemitism, and historical revisionismunder the guise of conservative values. Dubbed by many the woke right, they champion Americas adversaries, from Putins Russia to Iran and communist China, threatening to derail Trumps presidency and U.S. strategic interests. How did this divisive trend infiltrate the MAGA camp? Can the America First movement reclaim its conservative soul?

10:00 am What role can and should American Jews play in the ongoing struggle for Israeli democracy with Judy Maltz

Israels current government, the most right-wing in its history, raises profound concerns with its actions during this devastating war. As the conflict continues, a disturbing trend has emerged: Advancement of a Judicial Coup: A significant move to undermine judicial independence, which many view as a direct threat to Israel's democratic foundations.Hostage Release as a Secondary Goal: Focusing on military operations has overshadowed the urgent need for hostage negotiations.Endless Warfare: The ongoing conflict serves as a political survival lifeline for the coalition, rather than a genuine effort to achieve a ceasefire. At the same time, the extremist ideology of Kahanism, once outlawed, has infiltrated the highest levels of government. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, a prominent figure embodying this dangerous ideology, is turning Kahanist policies into state policy. This normalization of religious extremism poses a severe threat to Israels pluralistic character and its future. These policies are actively undermining democratic institutions, sparking massive street protests, and deepening societal divisions. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of IDF reservists are being called up for expanded operations in this ongoing multi-front war, which includes Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, the West Bank, and potentially Iran. Our speaker will address critical misunderstandings between American Jews and Israelis, focusing on whether Jews living in the Diaspora should express their views on domestic issues in Israel and whether such expressions can be beneficial.

1:30 pm The Quest for Significance: How the Drive for Meaning Shapes Conflict and Identity with Arie W. Kruglanski and Dan Raviv

What drives human behavior at its core? For many, its the deep-seated need to live a life of purpose, to be seen, respected, and valued. But what happens when that need is denied? In their provocative new book, The Quest for Significance: Harnessing the Need That Makes the World Go Round, Distinguished Professor of Psychology Arie W. Kruglanski and journalist Dan Raviv explore how the pursuit of significance can lead to both personal fulfillment and global unrest. Join Kruglanski and Raviv as they delve into the psychological forces behind some of todays most pressing conflicts. From the Jewish peoples restoration of dignity through the founding of the State of Israel after the Holocaust, to the ongoing Israel-Gaza war and the Palestinian demand for recognition and respect, the authors examine whether these struggles reflect a zero-sum battle for significance. They also explore how this same dynamic is shaping political movements and polarization in the United States. This timely conversation sheds light on the powerful motivations that influence identity, justice, and the course of history.

Tour of Jewish IrelandTranscripthttps://otter.ai/u/SQ7XlKrOZ6ydpWwvk6vOPSeK0r4?view=transcriptThe discussion traces the history of Jewish communities in Ireland, starting with the Vard family's migration from Poland to London and then to Dublin to avoid World War I conscription. The community, initially known as "English Jews," grew to about 5,500 by the early 20th century, with significant contributions in trade and politics. Post-World War II, many moved to Israel, reducing the community to about 2,500. The conversation highlights the minimal anti-Semitism in Ireland, the community's integration, and their role in Irish independence. It also addresses the current anti-Zionist sentiment in Ireland and the community's dual identity.Action Items[ ] Provide the speaker's contact information (Dublin tails@gmail.com) for access to documentaries about the Jewish community in Ireland.[ ] Follow up on any questions or further information about the Jewish-Irish experience, including unique cultural influences and the relationship between religious and national holidays.OutlineHistory of the Vard Family and Early Jewish Settlement in IrelandSpeaker 1 explains the origin of the Vard family name, originally spelled Vardich, and their migration from Bialystok, Poland to London in the late 1880s.The family moved to Dublin to avoid conscription in World War I, settling in the south of Dublin, particularly in Portobello, known as "Little Jerusalem."Abraham Vard and his wife Daisy moved to Dublin, where they became successful furriers, and their children became professionals like teachers, lawyers, and doctors. The Jewish community in Ireland has shrunk from about 5,500 to 2,500 members, with most living in Dublin, and the community is divided between recent Israeli immigrants and descendants of Lithuanian Jews from the late 19th century.Early Jewish Communities in IrelandSpeaker 1 discusses the history of Jewish communities in Ireland, starting from the 12th century with a group of merchants from Normandy. In the 1170s, Henry II of England invaded Ireland, and a Jewish man from Gloucester contributed money towards the invasion. The first mention of a Jewish community in Ireland dates back to 1079, with a group of merchants from Normandy. The English expulsion of Jews in 1291 led to the disappearance of the Jewish community in Dublin, but some may have moved to Cork.Oliver Cromwell and the Establishment of the First Synagogue in DublinSpeaker 1 explains that Oliver Cromwell lifted the ban on Jewish people living in England and its empire in 1657, leading to the establishment of the first synagogue in Dublin in 1662.The community grew to about 450-500 individuals by the end of the 18th century, known as the English Jews, and included traders, bankers, and architects. The first Jewish cemetery was opened in 1718, and there were two synagogues in Dublin by the end of the 18th century. The arrival of Russian Jewish refugees in the late 1870s led to the establishment of new synagogues and kosher businesses in Dublin. The Impact of the May Laws and the Arrival of Russian RefugeesSpeaker 1 discusses the May Laws passed by Tsar Alexander III in 1881, which restricted the rights of Jewish people in Russia, leading to their migration to Dublin.About 60% of the Russian Jewish refugees who arrived in Dublin came from the village of Akmena in Lithuania. The newcomers, known as the Crazy Russians, were more religious and initially did not mix well with the established English Jewish community. The community settled in Portobello, where they opened kosher butchers, bakers, and grocery stores, and six synagogues were established. The Role of Jewish People in the Irish Independence MovementSpeaker 1 highlights the involvement of Jewish people in the Irish independence movement, including Robert Briscoe, who ran guns for the Irish Republican Army.Jewish activists like Ellen Blumensheim and Chief Rabbi Herzog Michael Noych played significant roles in the movement. The first Jewish member of the Irish parliament was elected in 1927, and Jewish people were seen as having sided with the right side in the struggle for independence. The character Leopold Bloom in James Joyce's "Ulysses" is based on a Jewish Italian man, Italios Favro, and Bloom deals with low-level anti-Semitism in Dublin. The Holocaust and the Irish Jewish CommunitySpeaker 1 discusses the lack of support for Jewish refugees during World War II, with only 65-100 Jews admitted to Ireland between 1939 and 1945.Eli Steinberg, an Irish Jewish woman, and her family were killed during the Holocaust, and their tragic story is well-documented.The Irish government's poor record in supporting refugees during the Holocaust is highlighted, with only a few Jewish refugees admitted. The community's post-war peak was in the 1950s, with about 96,000 Jews in Ireland, and many moved to Israel for economic opportunities. The Post-War Jewish Community and the Role of Chaim HerzogSpeaker 1 explains the economic decline in Ireland post-war, leading many Jews to move to places like Manchester, New York, and London.Chaim Herzog, a prominent Irish Jewish figure, had a significant political career in Israel, including serving as President of Israel.Herzog's interview with a Jewish journalist from Belfast highlights the similarities between the Irish and Jewish experiences of oppression and the importance of compromise. The community's relationship with the Irish government and the Catholic Church was generally positive, with key Jewish figures having connections to the Prime Minister and the Catholic Church. The Current State of the Jewish Community in IrelandSpeaker 1 discusses the current state of the Jewish community in Ireland, with about 2,500 members, mostly living in Dublin. The community is divided between those who have moved to Israel and those who remain in Ireland, with many holding dual Irish-Israeli citizenship. The growth of the anti-Zionist movement in Ireland is attributed to Ireland's participation in UN peacekeeping missions in Lebanon and the country's historical support for underdog causes. The community's relationship with the Irish government and society is generally positive, with many Jews feeling a strong sense of Irish identity. The Role of Religion and National Holidays in the Jewish CommunitySpeaker 1 explains that religious holidays like St. Patrick's Day have become more secular in Ireland, with a focus on drinking and celebrating Irish identity. The Jewish community in Ireland is generally not very religious, with many having moved away from traditional practices. The community's relationship with the Catholic Church has been positive, with key Jewish figures having connections to the Church and the Prime Minister. The community's history of involvement in Irish independence and their contributions to the local economy have helped them integrate into Irish society. Conclusion and Final ThoughtsSpeaker 1 concludes by emphasizing the importance of coexistence and learning from history, regardless of religious or national differences. The Jewish community in Ireland has a long and rich history, with many contributions to Irish society and culture. The community's resilience and adaptability have helped them integrate into Irish society and maintain their identity. The current state of the community is positive, with many Jews feeling a strong sense of Irish identity and contributing to Irish society.

News You Can Trust - c/o HonestReporting

Times of Israel -

Founded in 2012, this online-only newspaper was established by UK-born veteran Israeli journalist David Horovitz. According to its website, TOI “has no partisan political affiliation. It seeks to present the news fair-mindedly and offers a wide range of analysis and opinion pieces.”

Founding editor Horovitz is one of the most sensible and coherent voices offering analysis of the Israel scene both on the TOI site and as a commentator in the international media.

A particular feature of TOI is its blogs section where anyone (within reason) can open a blog and contribute their opinions on any subject. The best quality articles are selected by TOI opinion editors for the featured section. As opposed to other media outlets that have a consistent roll of columnists or contributors, TOI offers a vast selection of opinions. Although it aims to be Israel’s “marketplace of ideas”, some argue that the political range of opinions gravitates heavily towards the center or center-left, as writers with firm left-wing or right-wing views prefer to see those views published on other news sites.

TOI’s website is clean, user friendly and well set out without too many distracting ads.

Jerusalem Post -

Founded in 1932, the Jerusalem Post, or JPost, is the most well-known and still the most widely read Israeli news site. While sharing much of the same content, the print and web editions are technically separate entities. However, if you happen to be in Israel, make sure to grab yourself a copy of the Friday edition, which comes with lots of extra supplements to read over the weekend.

The JPost is considered to be politically center-right although it does aim to provide balanced coverage from across the political spectrum. On the subject of Israeli politics, it’s well worth following the views of JPost journalists Lahav Harkov and Gil Hoffman, who offer regular analyses of the complicated goings on in the Knesset and Israel’s often-fraught domestic politics.

The JPost’s website is, unfortunately, let down by a somewhat chaotic layout and dominated by pop up ads that can spoil the viewing experience.

Ynetnews (English Language version of Yediot Ahronot

YNet News is the English language website of the Hebrew daily Yedioth Ahronoth. Offering translations from the Hebrew website, YNet News offers a limited number of articles and some of the best writing from Yedioth’s stable of columnists. Of particular interest for HonestReporting readers are the columns of Ben Dror Yemini who often writes about Israel’s public diplomacy efforts and debunks some of the lies that are being spread about the Jewish state.

The YNet News website is straightforward and offers a selection of Israel’s top stories of the day.

i24 News

The newest addition to the Israeli media, i24 News broadcasts in English, French and Arabic and aims to bring “unfiltered, unbiased, global news from where it happens.” While headquartered in Jaffa, i24 has also opened a studio in the US, expanding its reach through cable TV in the US as well as a number of European and African countries. Remarkably, even though it has been broadcasting since 2013, it was only in 2018 that i24 News was able to broadcast on the Israeli HOT cable TV due to legal issues of ownership.

i24 News’ various current affairs shows offer a wide range of guest commentators including HonestReporting’s very own Executive Director Daniel Pomerantz who appears on a regular basis.

Recently, i24 News has made greater efforts to produce more original content from Israel rather than relying on wire services, which is a welcome development. Unfortunately, due to its expansion in the US, i24 News requires a small monthly fee to access its live television broadcast through its website but if you are looking for a 24/7 rolling news and current affairs TV station focused on Israel and the region, i24 News is really the only place to go.

Left-leaning: Haaretz

Israel Hayom’s Hebrew print edition is the country’s largest circulation newspaper by virtue of the fact that it is given out for free. You can spot the ubiquitous red uniforms of the distributors at major road junctions and transport hubs during the morning rush hour handing out copies to commuters.

Israel Hayom earned itself the nickname “Bibiton” an amalgamation of Benjamin Netanyahu’s own nickname and the Hebrew word for newspaper. Hardly surprising as the newspaper was intended to level the media playing field by Netanyahu benefactor and Israel Hayom’s main investor Sheldon Adelson in the face of what was seen as an increasingly left-wing media landscape.

As for its English-language website, Israel Hayom offers a daily online newsletter with the main stories of the day. As such, it is static in that breaking news stories only appear in the next edition, much like a morning printed newspaper.
